REQUIREMENT FOR ENTRY

How to become a Registered Public Health Nurse

Applicants must fulfil the following admission requirements before being considered for the programme:

Holders of diplomas: Those who have passed the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s licensing exams and have a diploma in community health nursing from an accredited school will be allowed to the third year.

Access Program: Before being admitted into the Bachelor of Public Health Nursing Program at UHAS and the Bachelor of Science in Public Health Nursing Program at other Institutions, holders of NAC/HAC/NAP/CHNC certifications must complete the entry course for around six weeks.

Enrolled Nurse: Holders can gain admission to the six-week ACCESS course.

WASSCE or SSCE â€“ Six (6) credit passes (A1-C6) including English Language, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science and any three (3) relevant elective subjects in General Science. General Arts or Home Economics with an overall aggregate of 36 or better.

Registration with Regulatory Body.

It is important that every health professional have practicing license and public health nurses are not left out. After passing all your university exams, you must sit for the Nursing and Midwifery Council (N & MC) Examination and pass before you will be giving the license to practice as a registered public health nurse in the country.

How many years does one need to be a registered public health nurse in Ghana?

The number of years depend on your level of entry; for regular students entering with WASSCE/SSCE certificates needs to do four years and later sit for N & MC Examinations.

Those with certificate in NAC/HAC/NAP/CHNC need two or three years depending on the institution and with diploma holders who want to do a Top-up programme in public health nursing need two years.

With the achievement of the requirements of competency of devoted public health nursing, the programme seeks to ensure that professionals are trained to promote health and social well-being. The program also focuses on learning how to promote a healthy lifestyle, as well as how to improve and safeguard health in both the public and private sectors.
